Gmail on Windows Mobile 5 / Pocket PC - fix
Thursday, 8th June 2006I recently got a T-Mobile, MDA Compact II with windows mobile 5 and a generous GPRS option as part of my plan.
One of the first things that I wanted to do was hook up my Gmail account.. but found to my dismay, that it didn’t seem to work quite right. Messages would be downloaded and not displayed, or deleted on the next send/receive, or worse - just seem to do nothing at all.
Most of the various solutions I found online involved setting an option in my device to “download headers only” and download a large amount of the body (eg 999 kb). This solution had limited success in that I semed to read through a large number of headers, but still didn’t end up wiht any messages.
I decided to connect to my gmail pop using outlook to try and see what was going on. It turns out that I had a huge amount of email on my pop server (I have set gmail to provide all emails via pop). Something in the order of 300 mb - and all unread. I deleted all of my old emails from the gmail pop server… then removed gmail pop from outlook. Wow now Gmail seens to be working on my device!!! Hooray!

Six weeks in a leaky city

I just looked at my calendar and realised that I have been here in London for 5, going on 6 weeks!!!!! And I haven’t been working since.. March 8… so something like 2.5 months!!! Worse, I actually don’t want to start working.. :)
But I have been interviewing… I call it interviewing at leisure.
Though some interviews are more leisurely than others. In fact, I was massacred by a written technical test at RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) yesterday. That interview was over 2 hours. Maybe my charm will get me through?
In other news, I have taken residence on New Oxford St (near the British Museum) for the next two months. This place is tiny!!! But it is brand spanking new.. with all the mod cons included - like broadband and digital TV :) Pretty groovey really. Fay will be arriving tomorrow (Saturday morning) and we’ll probably look for a new, bigger place in a while.
As for London itself, the weather is shit. As I look at the window onto the roof of the italian restaurant next door, it is grey, wet and ugly. Though I must say that when the sun is out, it does look/seem/feel glorious! Maybe it’s the bad which makes you appreciate the good? I think I am slowly beginning to appreciate (or get used to) the sites and sounds of London.
Windows media player 11
Tuesday, 23rd May 2006I just saying to a friend the other day “I wish there was a music player for my pc that would let me browse by album cover”. I had grown accustomed to this in my windows media centre edition… but i want it on my lap top too.Anyway, it turns out that the new version of Windows Media Player, version 11, does just that :)

I have only just downloaded the beta version, but so far it looks pretty nifty. I note however, that it still doesn’t sync with my ipod… which is a shame. Maybe that will make it in by the time the full realease comes out :)
Ghost City
Saturday, 20th May 2006A friend of mine just sent me a link to a story about a “ghost town” in Cypress. (ok, ok.. so this isn’t exactly straight from the horses mouth!)
Apparently it has been claimed and sealed off by the Turkish military since the 70’s. There are a lot of these weird scenarios around the world…
I won’t regurgitate what I read.. I think it’s worth a squiz. Well done Micahael Totten for your investigative reporting :)
