The Devil Wears Prada

Friday, 6th April 2007

Having just finished watching ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, there is a statement which demonstrates stereotype of women in position of power. The statement, spoken by Anne Hathaway, was that if Miranda (the devilish boss in question) was a man, her management style would not be commented. While this statement could be construed as the rarity of women in position of power, this statement also has implication for management style. There is no reason why men should be excused for mistreating their staff, anymore than women. It would be a sad reflection of the 21st century, if we are still expecting that all women should be nurturers and men to be aggressive in the workplace. If a woman is assertive, this may be interpreted as aggressive and conversely, if a man is considerate, this could be taken as weak. Instead, everyone should be aiming for a harmonious and productive workplace where it is ok to be assertive while still considerate of other people.

A “brave” new world

Tuesday, 21st March 2006

Sometimes I feel like the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz. Every time someone say or do something that is unethically unsound or intolerant and I don’t speak up, I am reminded of an old Gregory Peck movie “Gentleman’s Agreement”.
Recently (well, within this year), I saw an example on the Chaser’s War on Everything how intolerant society is becoming. When some residents of Mosman were asked if they would support a mosque being built in Mosman, most of them prefixed their response with “Well, I have nothing against Islam but perhaps they would be more comfortable in their own community.”
The thing that interests me is by separating communities, they are already demonstrating their intolerance. Why sugar coat intolerance and hypocrisy with politically correct wording?
With the current international instability, this is the time everyone should start broadening our mind and thinking to embrace different cultures.

Reflection on the state of society

Monday, 17th October 2005

Society has, one must sadly conclude, move another notch closer to the silly direction. Apart from the cursory nod in the direction of Big Brother (which Orwell should really sue), say I from my lofty middle-class pretentious pinnacle, two recent evidence spring to mind.

1. Channel Ten’s astute marketing of the program ‘House’. The advertisement advised viewers to tune in to watch the confrontation between House and Vogler, adding that by the end of the show, one must go. Geez, I wonder who it will be?

2. Woman’s Day (always a source for silliness) article which suggests that Princess Mary’s and Prince Frederick’s baby could belong to Jesus’ bloodline based on the evidence of the Da Vinci code. Wonder if the writers/editors at Woman’s Day has twigged that the Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction. Hmmm.

TomKat’s pregnancy

Thursday, 6th October 2005

Not sure if anyone has caught up with the gossip lately but it appears that Katie Holmes is pregnant. Correct me if my memory is faulty but isn’t Katie the girl who stated her intention to remain a virgin until marriage? Perhaps the church needs to follow up on this apparent miracle. ; )

As a fan of Mr Cruise (he is just going through a mid-life crisis), I can understand Katie’s temptation. The only question I have with her pregnancy is why can’t Tom respect her decision to wait under the wedding?
