A “brave” new world

Tuesday, 21st March 2006 by aixingioro

Sometimes I feel like the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz. Every time someone say or do something that is unethically unsound or intolerant and I don’t speak up, I am reminded of an old Gregory Peck movie “Gentleman’s Agreement”.
Recently (well, within this year), I saw an example on the Chaser’s War on Everything how intolerant society is becoming. When some residents of Mosman were asked if they would support a mosque being built in Mosman, most of them prefixed their response with “Well, I have nothing against Islam but perhaps they would be more comfortable in their own community.”
The thing that interests me is by separating communities, they are already demonstrating their intolerance. Why sugar coat intolerance and hypocrisy with politically correct wording?
With the current international instability, this is the time everyone should start broadening our mind and thinking to embrace different cultures.

I think that “unethically unsound or intolerant” is subjective. And being tolerant is certainly much easier said than done. I agree with you.. but I know myself, that there are many things/activities/people around me that I certainly would prefer not to be there. This is despite the fact that I know that they may well with in their right to exist. I suppose we should still strive for these ideals, but perhaps it’s more realistic that I focus on not letting my intolerance turn into anger and aggression. ? Just thinking out loud here…

I am not really angry as such. More disillusioned.
